MCJ Member Links The Michigan Coalition for Justice (MCJ) is a diverse
group of organizations and individuals committed to the reform of
Michigan’s public defense system to ensure fundamental fairness.
The MCJ recognizes that in the
absence of a working public defense system, the entire criminal justice
system fails, and all of Michigan’s citizens suffer. Innocent people go
to jail, while guilty people remain free to commit other crimes.
Additionally, the failing is unfair to taxpayers, creating massive
inefficiencies that increase court and jail costs.
The MCJ engages in public education, litigation and
advocacy aimed at improving public defense in Michigan. The MCJ believes
that achieving this objective requires the state to establish a public
defense system that complies with the American Bar Association’s Ten
Principles of a Public Defense Delivery System, as well as the Eleven
Principles of a Public Defense Delivery System created by the Michigan
Public Defense Task Force and approved as policy of the Michigan Bar
Association in 2002.
